Why We Donate 10% of Our Profit to Frauenzimmer e.V. – And What That Has to Do with True Responsibility
At Izanami, when we say that table culture is more than just design, we mean exactly that: it's about the space in which life unfolds. It's about warmth, connection — and responsibility. That’s why we donate 10% of our profit to Frauenzimmer e.V., an association based in Berlin that supports women in existential crisis.
But why this particular organization? And why at all?
This article offers a deeper look — into our motivation, but also into a reality that often remains hidden.
Violence Against Women: A Crisis at the Heart of Society
Domestic violence is not a fringe phenomenon. It’s a massive social issue — even (and especially) in a wealthy country like Germany. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, more than 256,000 cases of domestic violence were recorded in 2023 — an increase of 6.5% compared to the previous year. Over 70% of those affected are women. (BKA Situation Report 2024)
And these are only the reported cases. The actual numbers are likely far higher. Studies suggest that one in three women in Germany will experience physical or sexual violence at least once in her life. (BMFSFJ, 2022)
Who Is Frauenzimmer e.V. – And What Do They Do?
Frauenzimmer e.V. is an independent, feminist initiative based in Berlin. For over 20 years, they’ve supported women in extremely vulnerable situations — women affected by domestic and sexualized violence, women in forced or survival prostitution, women without housing, or refugee women living in Germany.
What makes their work unique is the low-threshold, outreach-based approach: the team goes where help often doesn’t reach — to emergency shelters, the streets, women’s refuges, and refugee accommodations. There, they offer what many of the affected women otherwise don’t receive: genuine listening, concrete support, long-term guidance.
Their services include:
- Secret, protected housing in Berlin for women and their children
- Individual psychosocial counseling in a safe and private environment
- Support navigating public offices, job centers, health authorities, and access to medical care
- Stabilization through conversation, group offerings, and empowerment tools
- Connection with broader support networks across Berlin
A central pillar of their work is trauma-informed care: Frauenzimmer meets women with respect, free of judgment or pressure. The realities of those affected are acknowledged. Their decisions are respected. Their dignity remains central — always.
In a world where so many women fall through the cracks, Frauenzimmer offers something rare: a place of trust, of humanity, of second chances.
Why We Support This Organization in Particular
There are many great initiatives — but Frauenzimmer e.V. touches us at our core.
Maybe because their work starts precisely where others look away.
Maybe because we understand how difficult it is to break free from cycles of violence alone.
Maybe because we believe that women’s empowerment is more than a trendy marketing phrase.
And ultimately, because many of us are women entrepreneurs, mothers, daughters, and hosts — and we deeply feel what it means when a woman regains her dignity and independence.
